There were 49 motorcycle deaths in Massachusetts during the first nine months of 2010, which is an increase from 43 during the same period in 2009. While Massachusetts experienced an increase in motorcycle accident fatalities, the number of motorcycle deaths nationwide decreased by 2 percent, according to data released by the Governors Highway Safety Administration (GHSA).

While everyone welcomes any drop in motorcycle deaths, the data is troubling to some safety advocates because motorcycle accident fatalities actually started to increase during the last three of those nine months.  Officials at the GHSA said in their report that motorcycle helmet use dropped at an alarming rate nationwide, from 69 percent in 2009 to 54 percent in 2010. Furthermore, they say more people are riding motorcycles as gasoline prices rise, which increases exposure to risk.

The GHSA has several recommended strategies for motorcyclists and state officials to prevent injuries and fatalities. They include wearing helmets, reducing alcohol impairment, reducing speeding, and providing operator training to all who need or seek it.
